Misc: The Word XVIII

Big thanks to Jen for these old pics of Rashida and her dad. So cute!

November 21, 1987: U2 Party at Jane Fonda's Home in Beverly Hills, CA

April 8, 1988: American Soviet Film Initiative Gala at the Bel Age Hotel in Hollywood, CA

November 23, 1992: World premiere of 'The Bodyguard' at Mann Chinese Theater in Hollywood, CA

TV Guide has confirmed Rashida will be reprising her role as Karen Fillipelli in an upcoming episode of The Office. Click here for more info about the February 17th episode.

Some info about her appearance in Fight For Your Right Revisited:

But not just any actors. Seth Rogen portrays the Beasties’ Michael “Mike D” Diamond, Elijah Wood embodies Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz and a trash-talking Danny McBride channels '80s-era Yauch via four-day growth of beard and sleazy leather jacket.

The trio rob a bodega, spray beer all over passersby on a New York-esque (read: Hollywood movie studio backlot) street and generally raise havoc wherever they go, terrorizing a Who’s Who of movie bigshots in the process: Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson and Will Arnett among them -- but also Kirsten Dunst, Rashida Jones and Orlando Bloom (wearing a vintage Def Jam jacket in homage to the group's former record label). But the Beastie party mayhem doesn’t stop there. The “Beasties” are picked up by “metal chicks” portrayed by Chloe Sevigny and Maya Rudolph with whom they ingest whippets and drop liquid acid.

The whole, ahem, brouhaha culminates with a confrontation with none other than the “Beastie Boys from 25 years in the future”: Will Ferrell (as Ad-Rock), John C. Reilly (as Mike D) and a petulant Jack Black as MCA. A wild break dance contest turns into an actual pissing contest that is broken up by a trio of New York cops –the real Beastie Boys.

The Social Network won four awards from the National Board of Review (Best Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor). The actual award ceremony will be hosted by Meredith Vieira on January 11, 2011 at Cipriani's 42nd St. in New York City. Rashida of course plays Marylin Delpy, a young lawyer on Zuckerberg's deposition team, in the film.

Monogamy has been nominated for an Independent Spirit Award in the Best First Screenplay category. The film was written by Dana Adam Shapiro (also director) and Evan M. Weiner, with Rashida and Chris Messina starring as Brooklyn couple Nat and Theo. Monogamy has been screening at select film festivals in America and Europe and will be released in theaters in 2011. The Indie Spirit Awards will be hosted by Joel McHale on February 26, 2011.

My Idiot Brother will premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. The film has been selected in the Premieres section, which runs January 20-30, 2011.
Director: Jesse Peretz; Screenwriters: Evgenia Peretz and David Schisgall
Cast: Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer, Steve Coogan, Hugh Dancy, Rashida Jones, Kathryn Hahn, Shirley Knight, TJ Miller, Janet Montgomery and Adam Scott
Official synposis:

Ned (Rudd) is an idealist. His three sisters (Banks, Deschanel, Mortimer) are ambitious. His mother (Knight) is overbearing. Ned crashes at each of their homes, in succession, and brings truth, happiness and a sunny disposition into their lives. In other words, he wreaks havoc.
Ned Rochlin (Rudd) looks for the good in every situation and in everyone, which often puts him at odds with the world around him – especially his family. Upon being released from jail for selling pot, Ned turns to his oldest sister, Liz (Mortimer), a high-strung mother of two for a place to stay and a job helping to take care of her 7 year old son River, but his version of what’s fun for kids doesn’t fit with his sister’s carefully crafted child- rearing program. After upsetting Liz’s life, Ned relies on middle sister Miranda (Banks), a career-driven journalist, for a place to crash. He quickly makes a mess of Liz’s big break and shakes up her carefully compartmentalized love life. He is then forced upon his youngest sister, Natalie (Deschanel), whose wild-child past threatens to ruin her happy existence.
Banks, Deschanel and Mortimer co-star as the three sisters whose lives are hilariously disrupted by their well-meaning brother (Rudd). Banks portrays Miranda, the career-driven single sister who is about to get her big break in journalism after spending years writing about accessories at a fashion magazine; Deschanel portrays Natalie, the artistic hipster, a bisexual who’s flakiness and lies are getting in the way of moving forward with her caring, responsible girlfriend Cindy (Jones), who is looking to move the relationship towards a more committed place and; Mortimer portrays Liz, the Park Slope mom who’s too worried about having the perfect life and children to notice that her marriage is falling apart. Coogan portrays Dylan Byng, a self-righteous documentary filmmaker, married to Liz (Mortimer). The two live a supposedly idyllic life in Park Slope, Brooklyn with their young children, River and Echo. Scott portrays Jeremy, Miranda’s(Banks) upstairs neighbor. Dancy portrays Christian, a pretentious painter friend of Natalie’s (Deschanel) who tries to help Ned grow as a person by showing him another path; Hahn plays Janet, Ned’s (Rudd) ex-girlfriend who, out of spite, is keeping him from reuniting with his beloved dog Willie Nelson; Knight portrays Ilene, Ned’s overbearing and over-nurturing mother, who would be overjoyed if her son moved back home and; Montgomery portrays Arabella, a controversial British aristocrat that Miranda (Banks) is profiling for her magazine, a piece that could provide Miranda with the big break she has looking for.

Walt Disney Studios have brought the release date forward to 23 November 2011 (Thanksgiving weekend) instead of Christmas Day. They are also using new title 'The Muppets Movie' over earlier reports of 'The Greatest Muppets Movie Ever Made' (my fave) and 'The Muppets'.

Vanity Fair cover?
The annual Vanity Fair Hollywood Issue is being shot soon and Rashida is rumored to be on the (inside) cover. Pretty exciting!

WWD.com: As for Vanity Fair’s Young Hollywood issue in March, sources said the magazine will shoot the cover next week and among those said to be in the running to be included are Natalie Portman, Ryan Reynolds and James Franco. Potential candidates for the inside cover are said to include Lawrence, Rashida Jones, Paula Patton, Andrew Garfield and Noomi Rapace, who played the lead in the original version of “The Girl in the Dragon Tattoo.” The theme is said to be along the lines of Thirties Shanghai. The list is being altered daily, so the lineup could change, noted one source.

Quoted: Rashida vs. Bubbles

In a candid Details interview about Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones recalls an incident involving Rashida and the infamous Bubbles.

WISEGUY Q&A
Q: Did you ever meet Bubbles?

A: Are you kidding me? He bit a hole in my daughter's hand! Rashida's hand. Rashida Jones—did you see I Love You, Man? That's my daughter. She was a little girl. And Bubbles bit her hand. Michael used to bring [the boa constrictor] Muscles and Bubbles by the house all the time, you know.

I think she told the story on a talk show once. Letterman maybe?

Magazines: People (Misc. 1997-2009)

I was checking if that Rashida/Jon story was on People.com and found a whole bunch of articles from their archives. They're in chronological order from May 1997 to May 2009 -in the first one with her mom and sister she was still at Harvard!- plus better versions of the "Most Beautiful" 2007 and 2009 shots posted earlier.

(2009-01-19) "Jason & Rashida: New Couple?" Um, no.

She's also mentioned in this interview with Tobey Maguire from 2002: they were together for 2 and a half years and broke up in 2000.

Magazines: Glamour scans (2005)

The Newsweek post about their interracial family reminded me of this old article from Glamour magazine. It's from 2005 and Rashida, Kidada and their parents talk about growing up biracial, their sibling relationship, family dynamics, dating and more. It's a good read and the family photos are adorable.

Daughter Rashida, pictured here with her mother in 2009, stars in the new NBC sitcom 'Parks and Recreation.' Still, the family is no stranger to controversy due to their mixed heritage: Rashida was denied entrance to an all-black sorority while at Harvard.

Magazines: O, The Oprah Magazine

Rashida shares her Aha! moment -and some wise words- in the April issue of O magazine. According to Oprah, an Aha! moment is "one of those unforgettable, connect-the-dots moments, when everything suddenly, somehow changed." Sadly Rashida's came as a result of her mom having cancer.

--------------------------------------------
Rashida Jones' Aha! Moment: On her Mom Peggy Lipton and cancer

When the actress's mother, Peggy Lipton, was diagnosed with cancer, Jones had a choice: fall into a dark hole or look for the lighter side.

My mother and I are more than best friends; we are partners in crime. After she and my father, Quincy Jones, separated when I was 10 years old, my sister, Kidada, who was 12, went to live with our dad, and I stayed with my mother. Mom is the most unconditionally loving person I will ever know, and she has always supported me on every level. Until last year she worked with me before every audition; she's given me perspective, and she has let me cry when things haven't gone my way—which, when you're an actress, can happen a lot.

In 2002 Mom and I got a chance to act together in a play called Pitching to the Star, with her brother, Robert Lipton. The three of us on the same stage—that was such a special experience for me. When the play was over, I went to London for four months. Just a couple of days after I came back, Mom was diagnosed with cancer. At 56, she'd gone in for a routine colonoscopy, and her doctors found a stage III tumor. They recommended surgery and chemo immediately.

The minute the word cancer enters your house, everything changes. I felt like a huge anvil had fallen on me. But I knew that action needed to be taken—there were logistics to handle, and my mother needed support. Luckily, both of us now lived in New York, which was a huge blessing.

Chemotherapy is brutal. The goal is pretty much to kill everything in your body without killing you. I wished I could have gone through it for her; I wanted to take the burden off her. Then I figured out a way to help.

I decided my job was to find joyful moments during what could have been a terrifying time for both of us. One time we were in the hospital's chemo suite, waiting for her to be called in for the treatment. There are performers in the waiting room to keep the patients entertained, and on this day there was a guitarist who was playing Simon and Garfunkel songs. He was so earnest, so sweet…and just not good at all. After he left, we laughed so hard. We had that moment of surrender where I thought, "This is kind of hilarious. I can't believe we're here, but thank God we're here together." We told dumb jokes all day; at one point, I started calling my mom "Chemosabe." We laughed so much, she almost seemed to forget she was sick. That summer all we did was laugh.

Just because a situation is grim doesn't mean you don't have every right to smile. It isn't about "being strong" and pretending everything's okay; it's about finding joy where you can. My dad has always said, "Approach life with love and not fear." It's such a dynamic way to live.

I know that in life there will be sickness, devastation, disappointments, heartache—it's a given. What's not a given is the way you choose to get through it all. If you look hard enough, you can always find the bright side.
